Tile basic objective of tilis study was the evaluation of gastric lavage in the treat ment of accidental ingestion of petroleum distillate products, with particular emphasis on the development of pulmonary compli cations. Also, more detailed information concerning various clinical and epidemio logic aspects of poisoning from these prod ucts was sougilt. In addition it was felt that such a study could help develop a prototype for the application of co-opera tive data-gathering and research procedures through the network of the National Clear inghouse for Poison Control Centers, thus
